"Long_Voyager, Now With More Caravanny Goodness" (long-voyager-2nd-edition)

I spent Friday evening and most of the day yesterday wet-sanding and buffing the van to hopefully get it to tolerable. It ended up decent, so I put my pinstripes back on and added some flair:

Wasn’t it green before?
When cops stop you... to umm... compliment the quality of your paintmanship, and run a check, do they ask why the vehicle is of a different color?

Green?
Cops have never bothered me on any of my repainted vehicles. I don’t think they care much about color so long as the vin matches the registration.

Tell me more about your wet sanding process, please. I got some more aggressive compound, and tried it on the i3 hood.
before:
after:
But still, so many scratches....
Again, nothing I can catch with my nail. I suspect it’s something different because the whole car is carbon fiber, so maybe the clear is a different formualtion. I don’t know.
I think sanding is the only thing left for me. Since it’s a CF panel, though, I can’t check the paint depth.

I used 1000 grit til almost smooth, then 1500 grit to finish smoothing/take out the 1000 grit scratches, then I used this:
With my variable speed buffer. It takes a lot of time, makes a hell of a mess, and you have to be very careful as it will burn through the clear/paint.
Once that has all the wet-sanding marks removed, I go over it all again with this:
Once I’ve done that then I usually just apply a coat of my favorite wax to keep everything protected.

I’m still not totally happy with it, but I don’t want to respray it all again, so it’ll have to do.

I’m a little surprised that you don’t go higher than 1500 grit, I guess.

In my head I distinctly remember it being green. Facts show otherwise. I would be a terrible witness.

The Ultra Cut compound has no issue taking out 1500 grit marks with ease, so there’s no need to go higher.

Pinstripes are easily the most under-rated accent out there!
IMO they really bring the 2-tone together.

This is true. We’ve been brain washed that it would be a good idea to pile our money into old clunkers and wrenching on rust is supposed to be fun. I bought that rumor. I don’t know what I am doing with myself anymore

Likewise, I get to own/maintain 3 vehicles that I enjoy, and they’re still cheaper than a single car payment on a new car.
I think it’s just good sense, the only ones brainwashed are those who think new = better.

My wife is brainwashed.... Dropped an insane amount (normal these days, but insane to me) on an MDX.
Soooo much more crap in it to nanny everyone in the car. So stupid. Might as well forget the skill of driving

This was about the only thing outside wheels that a rattle can got used on, that was only because it was my $100 beater, so no fucks were given.
Otherwise I always do it mostly legit, auto paint, hvlp gun, etc.

I’ve got a Safari that suffers from this.

Dealing with paint peel is NOT fun. Pretty much have to sand the whole panel to bare metal, then start over.

What about sand blasting if all you really want is a color and if it looks like the Rattle Can Express, that’s okay?

Do you think I could get any paint to stick to the primer that remains when the white paint peels off?
Long_Voyager, Now With More Caravanny Goodness
> Rusty Vandura - www.tinyurl.com/keepoppo
06/05/2019 at 17:30 | 0 |
IIRC the primer was the issue to begin with. Stripping it to the metal, then repriming/painting are probably your best bet.
I mean if you don’t care how it looks, you could feather it out, spot prime what hits bare metal, then paint it.
Rusty Vandura - www.tinyurl.com/keepoppo
> Long_Voyager, Now With More Caravanny Goodness
06/05/2019 at 17:32 | 0 |
No, it’ll definitely have to be a panel at a time to bare metal as you say.
I may do some experimentation with it. Would probably do that with Rusty first...
Is it harder/more costly in a shop to paint in the dull and low-sheen finishes?
Long_Voyager, Now With More Caravanny Goodness
> Rusty Vandura - www.tinyurl.com/keepoppo

It’s harder due to trying to match luster. Generally flat/satin finishes cost more.
If you can get the peeling paint to “feather”, meaning it stops peeling and starts sanding, you can spot prime, then just sand the panel and paint over it. Sometimes the feathered area shows through though, so usually just stripping the whole panel is your best bet.

No chance of feathering. A little bit of compressed air and the paint blows off in giant flakes.

Sadly stripping is likely your only option then. Blasting should work to get it down to metal.
